Cefzil is the brand name of Cefprozil, is a cephalosporin type antibiotic of the second generation. In Europe it is sold using the trade names Procef and Cronocef. The drug can be used to treat bronchitis, ear infections, skin infections and other bacterial infections. It comes in the form of tablets and liquid suspension. The increased risk of cross-allergy while taking Cefprozil and some other cephalosporins of the second-generation or later cephalosporins is not proven.

Inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall by binding one or more penicillin-binding proteins, which in turn inhibit the final transpeptidation synthesis of proteins in the bacterial cell wall and thus inhibits the biosynthesis of the cell wall. In the end, the bacteria dissolves into the ongoing activity of the autolytic enzymes in cell wall (autolysin and murein-hydrolase).

Cefprozil active "in vitro" against wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Bactericidal action Cefprozil is the result of suppression of cell wall synthesis. Cefprozil proven activity against most strains of the following microorganisms both "in vitro" and in infections: aerobic gram-positive microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus, Cefprozil inactive against methicillin-resistant staphylococci, aerobic gram-negative microorganisms, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis.

Cefprozil inactive against Enterococcus faecium, Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, Morgnella morganii, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia, Pseudomonas and Serratia, Bacteroides fragillis.

Indications for use: infections of the upper respiratory tract, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute otitis media, acute sinusitis, infections of the lower respiratory tract, bronchitis and pneumonia, infections of skin and soft tissue (complicated and uncomplicated), abscess usually requires surgical drainage acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections, including acute cystitis.

Currently bacteria such as Enterobacter aerogenes, Morganella morganii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, resistant to Cefprozil, while Salmonella Agona and streptococci are susceptible to Cefprozil. Some bacteria such as Brucella abortus, Moraxella catarrhalis and Streptococcus pneumonia, in various stages, have developed resistance to Cefprozil.
