Flagyl is an antibacterial antiprotozoal drug. The active substance is Metronidazole.
Flagyl sometimes assigned as one of the antibiotics in the complex therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Flagyl not used for eradication of Helicobacter pylori outside the special schemes, without drugs, reduce stomach acidity. Flagyl also not used in any form for the treatment of gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcers and gastritis in the absence of Helicobacter pylori in a patient.
Metronidazole is an effective antimicrobial and antiprotozoal by means of broad-spectrum. Metronidazole shows high activity against Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba histolytica, Lamblia intestinalis, as well as against obligate anaerobes (spore- and asporogenous) - Bacteroides spp. (B. fragilis, B. ovatus, B. distasonis, B. thetaiotaomicron, B. vulgatus), Fusobacterium spp., Clostridium spp. Peptostreptococcus spp., Peptococcus spp., sensitive strains of Eubacterium.
Indications for use of Flagyl: infections caused by protozoa, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amebiasis, amebic liver abscess, infections caused by anaerobic bacteria such as peritonitis, abdominal abscesses, and liver, endometritis, abscesses of the ovaries and fallopian tubes, postoperative complications, pneumonia, lung abscess, meningitis, empyema, brain abscess, bone infections, sepsis, skin infections, endocarditis, prevention of complications in surgical interventions on the colon, with appendectomy, gynecological operations, mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacterial infections, eradication of Helicobacter pylori when Helicobacter-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers, as part of complex therapy.
